TANZANIA'S Kilimanjaro Stars held Chipolopolo of Zambia to a 1-1 draw in the second Group B match of the G0tv CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Thursday.
Striker Felix Katongo put the visiting Chipololo into the lead to make it 1-0 just before the break of this thrilling encounter. The former African champions created several scoring chances but good goalkeeping by Kenya League champions Gor Mahia’s Ivo Mapunda and inept shooting denied them gilt edged opportunities to double their lead. Tanzania had enjoyed the lion's share of possession in the first half but poor finishing denied them a deserved goal. They however recovered their poise in the second half to grab an equaliser when Reynold Kampamba headed a corner taken by Salum Abubakar. Abubakar was named the man of the match and walked away with a GOtv decoder and T-Shirt. The draw saw the two tournament favourites share second position with one point for each with Zanzibar leading the pack with three points after their win over South Sudan on Wednesday. Tanzania coach Kim Poulsen said the rainy conditions slowed their game but they picked up in the second half which they dominated. His Zambian counterpart, Patrice Beaumelle said they were content with the draw considering that CECAFA is a tough tournament. Beaumelle who replaced Herve Renard in October said the pitch also posed challenges but expressed confidence of beating Burundi in their next game. Action returns to the same venue on Friday with Sudan taking on Eritrea and Uganda facing Rwanda in Group C encounters. |
