Festus Mbewe stepped off the bench to help the Chipolopolo of Zambia to a 1-0 win over Rwanda and lead Group ‘B’ after completion of the second round of matches.

Mbewe scored in the 70th minute with Chipolopolo holding firm to the slim lead to the final whistle. Zambia’s first chance of the game fell on the feet of Bornwell Mwape who twice saw his efforts go begging, with shots from distance.

Mwape had been given space by the Burundi defense in two separate occasions and he relished taking his chance from distance, unfortunately not precise enough to fin the back of the net.

Burundi’s best chance of the game came in the 38th minute, Abdoul Fiston getting the ball unmarked inside the box but unfortunately skied his effort out of target. Three minutes later, Burundi would have been punished for the missed chance but keeper Arthur Arakaza came to their rescue, denying Felix Katongo, who had superbly got off his marker on top of the box.

Zambia pushed hard in the second periodas they sought a nerve calming goal. Bornwell Mwape who was a menace to the Burundi defense tried his luck 13 minutes from the restart but his curling effort went just wide. Three minutes later, Julius Situmbeko wasted a glorious chance, shooting wide after being played well onto the right by Katongo.

Chipolopolo finally got the reprieve in the 70th minute, Festus Mbewe who had just come on for Bornwell Mwape tapping to the roof of the net from Felix Katongo’s cross. Burundi gave a fight in a bid to claw back at least one goal with Abdoul Fiston seeing his effort go begging with 15 minutes to go.

The result now sees Zambia go top with four points after their opening game 1-1 draw against Tanzania. Kili Stars are second with four points as well but a smaller goal difference while Somalia tail the pool with no point and no goal scored.

The 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup will be officially launched in Nairobi on Friday. The tournament draw will be conducted then with a title sponsor due to be unveiled during the breakfast function where ambassadors of nations taking part are lined up to be present. According to the regional football governing body Secretary General, Nicholas Musonye, all preliminary games will be played in Nairobi and Machakos. “For easier management and planning, other towns, Kisumu, Mombasa and Mumias will host some knockout matches,” Musonye disclosed on Tuesday. “We had expressed our reservation about the readiness of Kisumu but with the decision to have the preliminary matches in Nairobi, the lakeside town have more time to prepare,” the official added. Cecafa technical committee officials arrive in the country on Thursday to tour the venues and make a final submission on their fitness to host the competition that runs from November 27 to December 12. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) boss Sam Nyamweya told the organisers that the artificial turf has already been taken to Kisumu and work to lay it will commence before the end of the week. “The government approved the Sh3.6 million for the clearing for the turf. We have also agreed with the Kisumu County Government to clear the huge pile of garbage adjacent to the stadium,” the FKF boss added. The countries that have confirmed participation alongside the hosts are defending champions Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Sudan, Zanzibar, Eritrea and Zambi ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
